La Vie en Rose, Museo del Traje

Buenos días! Si estáis por Madrid todavía estáis a tiempo de ver "La vie en Rose", una exposición dedicada al color rosa en el Museo del Traje. Hace unos meses visité otra exposición dedicada a este color en el Museum at FIT de Nueva York, y ha sido muy interesante compararlas, aunque el rosa ha llevado una trayectoria bastante similar en Europa y Estados Unidos.

Good morning! If you are in Madrid you shouldn't miss "La Vie en Rose" exhibit at the Museo del Traje. I visited another exhibit at the Museum at FIT in New York a couple of months ago focused on pink color, so it's been very interesting to compare both and see that the symbolism in Europe and United States has been pretty similar.

Empezamos en el S.XVIII, cuando los colores pastel del Rococó se ponen de moda en Francia y llegan a España gracias a los Borbones, que siguen las tendencias versallescas.

We start in the Eighteen century, when Rococo pastels where the trend in France and became popular in Spain thanks to the Bourbons, who brought this trend from Versailles.

El rosa era un color utilizado por mujeres, niñas, hombres y niños.

Originally it was worn by women, girls, men and boys.

La Iglesia Católica también utiliza el color en sus vestimentas en el s.XVIII, dándole un simbolismo de obediencia y espiritualidad que acaba reservándose para la ceremonia del tercer miércoles de adviento.

The Catholic Church also used the color in its garments in the Eighteen century, associating it with obedience and spiritually, and it end up being used only on the third Advent Wednesday.

Durante el Romanticismo se consigue el primer tinte violeta, que da lugar a nuevas opciones de rosa, volviendo a los tonos claros que recuerdan el rubor en las mejillas de las mujeres, simbolizando a la mujer sumisa y obediente, delicada y llena de lazos y adornos.

During the Romanticism they came up with the first violet dye, which gave new pink shades, which reminded of women blushing, associated to a submissive and obedient women, always dedicated and covered in bows and adornments.

Durante la Belle Epoque la industria amplía las posibilidades del rosa con los nuevos tejidos y tintes, que permiten a las mujeres vestir de tonos intensos. Las mujeres mayores a finales del siglo XIX solo vestían colores pastel, pero desde comienzos del s.XX hasta la Primera Guerra Mundial visten de cualquier color a cualquier edad.

During the Belle Epoque the industry gave new possibilities of pink thanks to new fabrics and dyes, which made possible intense shades of pink. Old women used to wear pastel colors until the end of the nineteen century, but from the beginning of the twentieth until the World War I they wore any color at any age.

Fortuny tenía predilección por el rosa y conseguía tonos únicos gracias a la cochinilla y a mezclas con rojos y rosas químicos. Hacia 1910 los ballets rusos que llegan a París con elementos orientales inspiran a Fortuny a buscar matices y efectos lumínicos que acabarían definiendo sus tejidos. Ya sabéis que tengo debilidad con Fortuny y su plisado Delphos, y este mono de seda es una maravilla!

Fortuny really liked pink, and achieved unique shades thanks to cochineal dye and mixes with chemical reds and pinks. In 1910, the Russian Ballets that arrived in Paris with oriental elements inspired Fortuny in the search of new shades and light effects which would end up defining his textiles. You know how much I love Fortuny and his Delphos pleats, and this silk jumpsuit is just wonderful!

La asociación del rojo con la Revolución Rusa y el comunismo también afectan al rosa, que empieza a asociarse con lo blando. Así empieza a tomar un significado peyorativo y el régimen nazi marca a los homosexuales en los campos de concentración con un triángulo rosa. Elsa Schiaparelli hace todo lo contrario en los años 30, dando un carácter provocador al Shocking Pink que cambiaría la historia.

When red was associated to the Russian Revolution and Communism it also affected pink, which started to being seen as a soft color. It started to have negative connotations and the nazis marked homosexual people at the Concentration Camps with a pink triangle. Elsa Schiaparelli would change the History of pink giving it an opposite meaning in the 30's, turning Shocking Pink into a provocative color.

En los años 60 el color se apodera de la moda y nace el rosa comercial, utilizado en marketing para todos los productos dirigidos a la mujer.

During the 60's, color conquered the World and fashion, and comercial pink was born used by marketing campaigns in every women product.

A finales del s.XX el rosa toma un caracter subversivo, asociado a lo frívolo y lo erótico gracias a Vivienne Westwood, los movimientos punk, camp y kitsch. Así pasa a convertirse en un color reivindicativo.

By the end of the twentieth century pink color had a subversive side, often frivolous and associated to eroticism thanks to Vivienne Westwood, Punk, Camp and Kitsch movements. This way Pink became an activist color.

Aunque a lo largo de la historia el rosa haya tenido más o menos presencia en el armario masculino, es un color que siempre se ha mantenido en la indumentaria de los toreros.

Pink has been more or less present in male wardrobes along history, but it has always been part of the bullfighter's attire.
