Roma, ITALY

WHERE: Roma, Lazio, ITALY
WHEN: August 2014, 1 day
WITH: Myself
HOW: Plane from Madrid (2hrs)
WEATHER: Hot, with some clouds

I visited Rome for the first time 10 years ago, on a graduation trip. I think I had a hangover all over the city, or maybe it's been a long time and my memory is failing. Anyways, I hope when I look back at these pics 10 years from now I don't regret my outfit as much as I regret what I was wearing in 2004 (You'd ROTFL with those images!) The sandals are even older, I wore them to my school graduation, during my first kiss and I danced on them endless nights... but maybe roaming all over Rome on 10cm heels wasn't my wisest summer choice (mental note: next time follow your awesome advice on how to pack the Perfect Luggage)

We all know Rome can't be seen in a day, so I opted for a walk sightseeing anything I run into (eating gelatos to keep it up), and it turned out I got to see most of the city, taking it easy, having capuccinos at nice piazzas and dipping my feet on every fresh fountain. I'm sharing my route, not really Audrey-Hepburnish, but quite Sugar Lane!

12 km, 8hrs walking

I landed in Rome the previous night, and since staying staying alone in a hotel is the saddest thing ever, and it was Ferragosto, I tried CouchSurfing. So I ended up at the residential area (aka posh), at a senior gynecologists place, where christmas decorations were still in place (I find tinsel in August quite disconcerting). Early coffee for breakfast and I'm off to wander the streets or Rome (sneaking into the tram first, to continue the tradition)

I start early morning at Piazza del Popolo (A), trying to spot the differences on the two baroque churches.

I go across Via del Babuino to the steps at Piazza Spagna (B), always crowded and this time with the church going under renovation.

I go on along Via Condotti, the fashion street. Roman guys look pulled out of a Gucci banner, all covered in Gucci monogram; belts, sneakers, glasses, bags...

I go over Via Tomacelli to the Tiber and continue by the river until Castello Sant Angelo (C).

There's a great panoramic from Ponte Umberto I, with the bridges and the Vatican dome behind.

Walking on Ponte Sant Angelo (C) with all the sculptures is amazing.

I wander the streets to Campo de Fiori (D), which I'll show you in a different post, and on my way I found a Fabindia, in Italy! Jaw dropped.

I go through Piazza Navona (E), narrow and long, that's all.

Me quedaría aquí horas, si me dejasen quedarme a mí sola!

When I reach the Pantheon (F) tourists have already taken the city, and someone plays La Vie en Rose at the piazza instead of O Sole Mio, but it's spectacular anyways. I could stay here for hours, if only they let me stay alone!

I head to Tazza d'Oro for my second capuccino, but it's closed due to the holiday, so I go all the way up to Grom (G) and have the gelato of the month: pesca, amaretti e cioccolato. More on gelatos coming soon...

I go round Marco Aurelio Column (H) a couple of times and reach  Piazza di Trevi (I), with no water at all and hidden behind a huge scaffolding. Tremendously sad. They have assembled a walkway on the fountain so you can walk closer to it, after queuing. The long queue, souvenir stalls and 1 square-meter fish-tank to throw coins are almost as amusing as the fountain used to be. I already saw it, but japanese tourists faces look like mine when I went to the Alhambra and there was no patio nor lions.

The huge wedding cakish monument to Vittorio Emanuele (J) is unavoidable to see.

And I reach Ancient Rome area, along Via dei Fori Imperiali, with the Forum and the Palatine Hill on the background.

And the Coliseum (K) at the end, stunning and best seen from the Domus Aurea park.

One more gelato admirin the Coliseum and the Arch of Constantine and I go up to San Pietro in Vincoli (L), saluting Michelangelo's Moses. My favorite teacher, Juan Carlos, was in love with art and Rome, and he passed on me his fascination on contrappostos and the Moses, so this piece always reminds me of him.

And we move from Social studies class to the silver screen, with Gregory Peck taking Audrey Hepburn to the Bocca della Verita (M), which in my head transforms into the dog at The Sweetest Thing, so I refuse to touch it!

I carry on, cross the Isola Tiberina (N) and reach the Trastevere (O) neighborhood, with adorable streets and terraces to have another capuccino. You see I didn't have lunch, but sugar and caffeine keep me going!

Vuelo a Puglia!

Last feet dip in the fountain at  Santa Maria in Trastevere (P), and back to Termini to pick up my luggage. Flying to Puglia!

LO MEJOR/THE BEST: comerse un gelato con los pies en una fuente / eating a gelato with your feet in a fountain

LO PEOR/THE WORST: andamios en Piazza Spagna, Fontana di Trevi y media fachada del Coliseo / scaffoldings at Piazza Spagna, Fontana di Trevi and half Coliseum
