Chicago Architecture

By Sugar Lane - Monday, June 11, 2018

Good morning! Last week we visited Chicago, and I couldn't wait to show you this unbelievable city!  Today I'm sharing our first day there, admiring the architecture and wandering the streets. A wonderful experience that ended up in a neck pain from looking up so much! My cousin María lived here for a while and she gave us a great list to visit and eat, so here is my selection of "Risueño Style" tips to enjoy a day in Chicago!

The city center is built on both sides of Chicago river, which flows among all kinds of skyscrapers. Don't miss the River Walk and Marina City Towers, designed by Goldberg for mixed use: apartments, auditorium, parking and dock!

Start the day having brunch at Yolk, a local spot with endless egg dishes.

To get a general idea of the city (in a comfy way) take the First Lady cruise, by the Architecture Foundation, where they explain the city and its buildings with a lot of detail.

Trump Tower was designed by Adrian Smith, who also designed the Burj Khalifa. And 150 North Riverside is an amazing building defying gravity.

To the north we find the unique River Cottages by Harry Weese, where 4 families live. And a little ahead there is an industrial area with a huge warehouse that belonged to Montgomery Ward and a great cacao aroma coming from a nearby chocolate factory!

To the south we come across River City Marina, another gorgeous building by Goldberg, and the spectacular Willis Tower, the highest in Chicago and the second Highest in the United States.

The cruise finally takes you to Michigan Lake, where the curvy Lake Point Tower stands alone.

In the afternoon you can walk from the river to the Planetarium.

The amazing gothic tower was the Tribune headquarters until this week.

The new Apple building is an oasis with a wonderful view.

And Marina towers remind of corn!

Have a break at Wildberry and enjoy a cup of chai latte and yummy pancakes!

Also at Millennium Park we find the Pritzker Pavillion, by Frank Gehry, where they host open air concerts.

Cross Grant Park by the Buckingham Fountain, which refreshes anybody that walks nearby.

Finish the walk at the Adler Planetarium, from where you can see the skyline across Lake Michigan and a beautiful sunset.

Have some Deep Dish, the local version of pizza, made with a lot of cheese, tomato sauce and sausage. I prefer Italian pizza, but Lou Malnati's is a good place to taste it.

The skyscrapers by the River Walk and the peace around the Planetarium

LO PEOR/THE WORST: La deep dish / The deep dish
