American Universities

By Sugar Lane - Monday, August 15, 2022

United States East coast has some of the most prestigious universities in the country and the world, and during the past years I have visited some of them and observed college life in this country, which is quite different from the student years I lived attending university in Spain, Germany and India.

I am sure you all have some idea in your heads about college in the USA thanks to hollywood movies and series, but let me tell you some things I've noticed and learned since I have been living in the States. I am no expert here and of course I am sure each person lives a different axperience, but I am sharing my impressions and just hoping you find them interesting.

When students are still in high school they take the SAT or ACT exams. A 3 hour test where they check they have knowledge enough to attend university. The exam has a language part (reading and writting) and a maths part. Universities usually pay attention to those results, but it is not compulsory in all of them, and in fact, due to the pandemic, some of them stopped asking for it. Apart from this exam, they check your high school grades, you need to write and essay, and you can also get an scholarship for different reasons, not just if you are good at sports.

It is true that some students dream about going to a specific university since they are kids, and some take it as a family tradition they have to continue. It is also true that they all make a list with several options and apply to all of those so they have options. Once they are admitted, they want to live in the campus, even if their parents live in the city or half an hour away, if they can they move in to experience "independence".

Moving in is actually an event that takes place during Arrivals Week. I used to live on the limit of George Washington University campus, so I had the chance to witness the whole thing a couple of years, from the comfort of my living room. The logistics take place the second half of August, since classes begin at the end of the month. There are specific days to welcome students and they organize a whole Welcome Committee, with volunteers from the University, who organize traffic on the streets where the residential buildings are, decorate the buildings entrances with baloons and banners, and run with carts to help the families arriving with the trunks packed to install the new students. Streets get blocked with cars arriving from each side of the country and luggage carts pushed by volunteers on the sidewalks to the residence entrances. They carry quilts, pillows, toasters, family size detergent bottles, high school sport trophies, Oreo boxes... The students say bye to their parents, some look happy, some look sad, and they all look nervous. The parents hug each other, the younger siblings cry, the volunteers wait and smile.

Once they get settled, they receive a welcome pack with the University official clothes and merchandise, and they all wear it proudly, adding it to their wardrobe like normal clothes. T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, and in the last years also masks. The students believe in their college motto and wear the colors as if it was a football team. They also have their sports teams, cheerleaders and good luck mascots. Than spirit sometimes last longer than college years, and you can see retired men proudly wearing their t-shirts with bulldogs, bears and other college animals.

Fraternities and sororities are organizations inside universities, identified by 2 or 3 greek letters. Students in them are all of the same sex, they need to pass some requirements to be accepted, and their members live together in the same building. These organizations were originally Christians, but nowadays are more diverse.

The university degree is not as defined as it is in Spain, where each program has its content from beginning to end (except some optatives and free credits), and I am not sure I really understand the system here, but for what I have understood, you start with general studies in art or science and with time you choose some specific subjects that form your "major", something like your area of studies. You can actually change your major midway if you realize you like something else, but no need to start again from the beginning, the subjects you did already are supposed to be fine for wathever you want to do next. Please let me know if I'm mistaken in any of this, I would love to learn more about it.

Graduations are another one of those big events in American culture. I have degrees from 4 different universities, but I have actually not attended any of my graduations ceremonies (some because I had no interest, and the rest cause I was in a different country at the time), but in the States nobody would miss their graduation. In Spain May is traditionally the month we celebrate first communions, but in the States May is graduation month. Families go back to the places where they dropped their teenagers years before, hotels get fully booked, event venues are all busy, university halls are decorated with balloons, banners, tents, photographers are everywhere in the city taking pictures of the students wearing their gowns next to the city monuments and throwing their graduation caps to the air. Restaurants are overcrowded with students having lunch with their families and dinner with their friends, all wearing their graduation gowns. Macy's windows show dresses and accessories for prom and graduation parties, jewelries sell graduation charms and bakeries make graduation cupcakes...

And after all this info, here are some pictures of some of the campuses I have visited in the States, and I hope I get to visit more in the future!

George Washington University:

I am starting with GWU, which might not be the most famous one, but I have basically lived in its campus for 3 years. It is one of the main universities in DC, and it is not particularly beautiful, but has a great location downtown, a few steps away from the White House and the National Mall monuments. The Textile Museum is part of the campus, so you can imagine how much I like it!

Georgetown University:

DC's best known university and the most beautiful one as well. It is located in Georgetown, my favorite neighborhood. The main building is pretty amazing and has old rooms and corridors that look like you have gone back in time. It has a beautiful chapel in the central patio and it is a Jesuit university, like the one I attended for my master. Among its many notable alumni is Felipe VI, king of Spain. Students stay in colorful houses nearby and on-campus dorms, where they mark doors using Harry Potter houses names.

Yale:

This might be my favorite university so far. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, he buildings are pretty spectacular, the campus is really green, full of live and peaceful at the same time. I visited it with a wonderful weather, so really had a lovely time here.

MIT:

One of my cousins studied at the MIT the past years, so we had a wonderful guide to wander this iconic campus, the place to be for tech students all over the world. We could not enter the buildings due to pandemic times, but it was really nice and the views of Boston from this side of the river are the best.

Harvard:

Just a few steps from MIT you can find Harvard University, the oldest in the country. Its campus is huge and full of green spaces, and it's streets mingle with Cambridge city, so there is a nice vibe and plenty of places to have coffee or grab a bite.
