How to Pack really (reeeeally) light: Summer edition

By Sugar Lane - Tuesday, August 06, 2019

I love traveling, since I can remember. And when I travel it doesn't have to be far away by plane (although I also love that!), it can be a short day trip to some town nearby, cause when I travel with no luggage it makes me really happy. Years ago I stopped checking in luggage when taking a plane, to the point that when I moved to India, 10 years ago, I took just a cabin trolley with me (you can read more about that here). I have been improving my packing skills for years, but I still had a trolley to drag all over the airport.

Four years ago, Carlos and I started going on short trips, sleeping out just one night, cause taking 3 days off from our jobs wasn't really an option. Since we had little time, we planned a new strategy; not going to the hotel until it was time to sleep. This way, once we land on our destination we get to enjoy the place every minute, we don't waste any time dropping our luggage and checking in at the hotel, and the day after we get to enjoy every single minute until it's time to leave. The trick? Travel with whatever clothes we are wearing, toothbrushes, underwear and a lipstick. Wearing the same clothes 2 days in a row is not such a drama!

Once you try this method a couple of times you won't ever want to pack again, but, of course, this is fine for a couple of days. When we moved to United States we started going on longer trips, but we were determined to continue on our no-luggage method, so I improved my packing game and take all I need in my bag. I always use the Longchamp Le Pliage cause it is light and strong, I can close it easily and it is very neutral. So far it holds everything I need for 4 days/3 nights in cold weather and 8 days/ 7 nights in warm weather (I had to add a small crossbody on my latest trip)

Today I'm showing you what I packed for my latest trip. We spent a week in Florida, including beach days, romantic date nights, nature walks, amusement parks... And this are my tips to fit everything you need:

Select neutral bottoms: Always take a pair of jeans, a skirt and a pair of short in Summer.
Add a pop of color with silk scarves or garnments that don't take much space and feel fresh. The right lace nightgown can be used as a party dress for emergencies ;)

Separate the heavier and bulkier pieces to wear on the day you travel, and make sure you feel comfortable in them.

Fit everything in order: smaller bags inside bigger ones (Ikea Fladis basket fits inside the bag and it's perfect for the beach), fold everything in the same size and put it in a fabric tote (Cascabel ones are wonderful and also reversible!), fill the space left with your underwear, fit all your shoes in a dust bag, change the toiletries bag for a small bag and fill it with makeup and accessories (I use a Dior palette that comes with lipgloss, eyeshadow and bronzer). And don't miss this video:

I hope this post is useful for your next packing time, make things as simple as possible and enjoy your vacation!

  6. Oh many helpful tips here. Yes packing light is key. One year when I went to Paris right when I was leaving for the airport I realized I could barely lift my suitcase. I opened it and frantically pulled things out--mainly jeans. They are too heavy I know only bring two pairs lol.
